Congo Chair "l'Afrique" by Studio Job & Theo Ruth

Brand Studio Job

Dutch designer Theo Ruth (Netherlands 1915-1971) made an icon of the fifties when he designed the “Congo Chair” for Artifort in 1952. The chair is the designers' interpretation of traditional African seating. The chair comprises two separate elements that cleverly fit together. Gravity does the rest.

The upholstery is “l’Afrique” by Studio Job. l’Afrique emerged from the collaboration between Studio Job and Land Rover (2012-13). The designers were asked to design and produce a unique, sculptural Land Rover Defender on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the iconic vehicle. The Defender is strongly rooted in Africa. The designers therefore asked manufacturer Vlisco – a specialist for more than 100 years in the production and distribution of specialty fabrics for the African continent – to print a single batch designed by Studio Job for the interior upholstery of the Land Rover.

Of this batch Studio Job have upholstered these Congo Chairs exclusively for NLXL. The chairs were on display at the Salone del Mobile presentation of Studio Job & NLXL in 2014.

The chair have been used for 6 days, are as is, and are very exclusive.
